University of Maine at Farmington Performs Well at Bates Invitational

The University of Maine at Farmington men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Bates Invitational today in Lewiston, Maine. On the men's side the Beavers were one of six teams at today's meet with Bates College, Bowdoin College, the University of Maine at Orono, the University of Southern Maine, and Husson University rounding out the rest of the field. The University of Southern Maine did not compete on the women's side.

Men's Highlights:

Alixx Canwell (Chelsea, Maine) opened up the second semester the same exact way he ended the first. Canwell surpassed his school record mark of 14.32 meters in the weight throw with a 15.60 meter throw, finishing 6th. Canwell ranks 10th in all of New England in the weight throw. Canwell also added a throw of 12.90 meters in the shot put, finishing in 6th.

Alex Sheran (Nashua, N.H.) added a pair of top 10 finishes in the weight throw and the shot put. Sheran came in 9th place in the weight throw with a 10.61 meter throw. Sheran placed 8th in the shot put with a throw of 11.30 meters.

Connor Demmons (Boothbay, Maine) placed 10th in the shot put after a 10.54 meter throw. Demmons finish just outside the top 10 in the weight throw, placing 11th with a 9.16 meter throw.

In the triple jump, Ben Vachon (Portland, Maine) placed 2nd with a 12.66 meter jump. Vachon also placed inside the top five in the high jump with a 5.72 meter mark, tying him for fourth.

Seamus Reeve (Kittery, Maine) placed sixth in the 60 meter dash with a 7.26 second finish. 

In the highly competitive mile run, Covy Dufort (Wells, Maine) came in 14th place with a time of 4:34.42, just 14 seconds behind the leader. Jimmy Real (Nashua, N.H.) finished 12 seconds behind Dufort, finishing in 20th place.

In the 1,000 meter run, Justin Castaldo (Scarborough, Maine) placed inside the top five finishing in 2:47.75.

Women's Highlights:

On the women's side, the Beavers had a pair of throwers place in the top 15 in the shot put as Emily Hargreaves (New Gloucester, Maine) finished in 14th place with an 8.57 meter throw. Ilana Lybarger (Brussels, Belgium) placed 15th with an 8.39 meter throw.

In the weight throw, Lybarger finished 9th overall after a throw of 11.19 meters. Kaitlyn Harmon-Bolding (Biddeford, Maine) placed 11th with a 10.51 meter throw. Hargreaves was right behind Harmon-Bolding with a 10.37 meter throw of her own.

Erica Johnson (Nobleboro, Maine) broke the UMaine-Farmington school record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.35 seconds in the preliminary round. Johnson finished 4th in the event overall as she sprinted to an 8.40 second time in the finals. Johnson also placed inside the top five with a 3rd place finish in triple jump with a 10.16 meter jump.

Abigail Minott (Bath, Maine) finished in 7th in the 60 meter dash preliminary round as she raced to an 8.55 second time. Minott also placed 6th in the 200 meter dash with a 28.79 second time, 1.62 seconds behind the winner.

Anna MacDonald (Bangor, Maine) and Charlotte Wentworth (Sidney, Maine) each placed in the top five in the 1000 meter dash. MacDonald finished in 3rd place in 3:26.98. Wentworth finished behind her in 5th with a time of 3:39.40.

In the pentathlon from Friday evening, Carrie Burr (Pittsfield, Maine) came in 7th place with 1940 points.
