Rebecca recently took the Animal Training and Care course at Unity College with Dr. Caldwell.

Before Unity College, I was attending a community college called Brookdale. I had changed my major twice and simply couldn’t find the perfect fit.

I am located on the Jersey Shore in Monmouth County, and I am an undergrad majoring in Animal Health and Behavior. I chose Unity because it is affordable, accessible, and allows for opportunities to work while obtaining a degree. Unity is the only school I could find that has an “Animal Health and Behavior” major and not just an “Animal Science” major.

My instructor was absolutely amazing. Whenever I had a question or concern, my instructor was quick to respond, patient, and very willing to help in any way that was needed. She was also highly knowledgeable with plenty of experience, which is the perfect type of person to learn from. It is on the student to review all learning materials and complete the assignments, but my instructor clearly wanted to see me succeed and would help me do so.

Although the final assignment was extensive, it was an amazing way to learn how animal facilities operate. I acquired wide-ranging knowledge of facilities such as zoos, aquariums, shelters, and more. This specific assignment helped me learn about animal safety, animal behavior, animal health, habitat militance, management practices, and more.

I plan to train canines after Unity, as many dogs are simply misunderstood and the animal and pet parent need guidance. I am not 100% sure where I will end up, but it could be somewhere such as a zoo, rescue center, boarding facility, or a veterinary hospital. Wherever I do end up, I plan on changing many lives for the better and Unity is helping me make that dream of mine a possibility
