Meet Unity College Distance Education student Kelcey | Unity College
Kelcey recently took the Animal Behavior course at Unity College with Dr. Jan Tornick.
Before starting at Unity, I was a stay-at-home mom of two from Greensburg, Indiana. I started home-schooling my kids in 2019 while partly working within my home church on the financial team.
I applied to Unity on what I would call a purposeful impulse decision, it was the start of the pandemic, and I had nothing to lose. I had been looking into colleges for a while and I had spoken to a few advisers from other schools, but none of them offered the degree I was looking for with the allowed freedoms I needed to pursue my passion. I ended up finding Unity through an ad and quickly browsed the homepage. I found my desired major(s) and saw that Unity offered affordable and flexible online classes. So I took the leap and applied!
I started by majoring in Animal Health and Behavior. As a kid, I wanted to be a vet or zookeeper. Classes at Unity have strengthened my understanding of the world around me, it has provided me with the tools needed to achieve my dreams. Unity has shown me that the actions we do today impact our future, good or bad, and it is never too late to start making changes.
I recently took Animal Behavior: Evolution, Ecology & Social Behavior with Dr. Jan Tornick. While I enjoyed the class, my favorite part was learning about why animals do the things they do. I would never have been interested in researching had it not been for this class and the professor. Dr. Tornick was right there alongside us providing feedback and encouragement, she was always ready to answer any questions I had.
Once I graduate, I would like to work as either a wildlife rehabilitator, zoologist, or wildlife conservationist. The research knowledge I have gained through my time thus far at Unity has opened a whole new perspective for me.
