Sara recently took the Animal Health and Behavior course at Unity College with Professor Amber Ramos.
"Before starting Unity I had obtained my Bachelor’s in Psychology, and by the end of that degree, I felt kind of lost. I absolutely loved learning about the brain and science, but none of the career paths felt like the right fit for me. I then decided maybe it meant I needed to pursue another career, which led me to work on a Master’s in Architecture. It was an exciting change, and I was happy to learn but as time went on I knew that wasn’t right either.
I'm currently in Phoenix, Arizona, and I chose Unity because they offered me a program I was interested in pursuing while also providing me the opportunity to get an education that worked around my schedule with their online distance education program.
Animal Behavior and Modification was a great stepping stone for me to learn about things that would help shape my future career. It provided lots of opportunities to engage and discuss with other students, which I felt helped me to think deeper about topics and solutions to problems. I also loved how this class was focused on the end goal of creating a training manual. It was so fun to have a species, find an issue with that species where a training solution can be provided, and then week by week build a training program.
It was so much fun! At the end of it all, my main goal is to be an animal behaviorist, working especially with dogs. My current dog Koda, who is a four-year-old german shepherd mix, was adopted from a shelter and is reactive. I had never had a dog like this before, and every day I worked towards learning ways to help him. Working with him and realizing how much I loved helping him helped lead me to this degree and Unity.
