Deputy John Shirk/ Corporal Jeff Rice | Waldo County Sheriff's Office
On December 12th, 2022, Deputy Shirk responded to a reported residential fire. The information given by dispatch was that the fire was in the kitchen and that two animals were trapped inside the residence.
Deputy Shirk arrived on scene and grabbed his issued fire extinguisher. Deputy Shirk quickly entered the residence and began fighting the impending inferno. Like a scene from the movie Backdraft, Deputy Shirk put the fire out before firefighters arrived on scene.
The type of service and motivation that Deputy Shirk displayed is in standing with the high level of service and professionalism that the Waldo County Sheriff's Office strives to achieve. If not for Deputy Shirk's perseverance, and knowledge of firefighting, there is a good chance that this residence would have been lost to the fire. Deputy Shirk's service was above and beyond the normal level of response and we thank him for the action he took on this day.
