Belfast City Letter from the Parks and Recreation Director regarding browntail moth removal

044e

Letter from the Parks and Recreation Director regarding browntail moth removal:

Fellow Belfast Residents and Property Owners,

The City of Belfast will be making a concerted effort to attack the browntail moth problem this spring by contracting with Hawkes Tree Service to address some of the more heavily used public areas. These areas include Heritage Park, the Common, City Park, the Harbor Walk, down by the Harbor restrooms, along Main Street and City Hall.  Licensed arborists with Hawkes Tree Service will use a combination of soil injections and an organic spray referred to as spinosad. Soil injections will begin this week along the Harbor Walk and City Park, any place within 50 feet of the shoreline. Spraying will take place later this month at the other locations.

We are notifying you in the event you would like to consider contracting with Hawkes Tree Service while they are in Belfast addressing our public areas for your private property area. If you decide to use Hawkes it would be at your cost since they will be in Belfast for a period of time in May. If this is the case I would recommend contacting their office in order to discuss your options. The contact information for Hawkes Tree Service is:

Email: jarrodhawkes@gmail.com     or by phone: 207-442-7444

While the City of Belfast cannot guarantee Hawkes’ ability to schedule or assist all interested parties I do believe if we collectively as a community try to address the problem we can succeed at reducing the growth and spread of the browntail moth. If additional information is needed on public locations the City will be addressing contact Norm Poirier in Parks and Recreation at 338-3370 extension 127.

Best Regards,

Norm Poirier, Director

Belfast Parks and Recreation Department
