Knox County Sheriff's Office Public Safety Checkpoints

13831

UPDATE: We have received numerous inquiries about our recent news release with regard to Public Safety Checkpoints.

We did not anticipate that this matter would be such a topic of discussion among our community. Though we do encourage healthy discussion within our community we do not want to be the cause of angst for our community.

This public notice was made because of policies and rules for us to notify the public in advance that a checkpoint may be set up by law enforcement at any point as the result of various events, such as a barricaded subject. We have not received any funding this year to conduct highway safety details, such as impaired driving or seat belt enforcement; therefore we have no plans to conduct these types of details at this time.

Sheriff Carroll wants you to be aware that deputies, along with the assistance of our local law enforcement partners, will be conducting Public Safety Checkpoints, otherwise known as roadblocks, throughout Knox County for the remainder of the year.

Law enforcement utilizes checkpoints for several purposes such as detecting impaired drivers, getting unsafe motor vehicles off the roadway, and limiting the public’s access to unsafe areas, such as a police standoff.

Public Safety Checkpoints will be conducted by deputies at varying times and locations throughout Knox County, oftentimes with little or no notice other than this release, to safeguard you and your families from risky incidents and drivers.

We encourage you to:

-Double check that your vehicle is properly registered, inspected, and insured

-Ensure that all occupants and loads are secured properly

-Not engage in distracted driving behaviors, such as texting, eating, putting on makeup

-Be observant of speed limits and surroundings

If you have questions about your own circumstance or concerns about someone else's, feel free to contact us and ask to speak with a deputy. We do provide, when time allows, safety checks and Child and Occupant Safety Inspections, contact us anytime to schedule.

Please remember to be safe and enjoy your commuting experience responsibly!
